WriteToLearn Honored as Outstanding Education Technology Product
25th Annual "Technology & Learning" Awards of Excellence Recognize Pearson's Web-Based Learning Tool for Responding to Schools' Needs
BOULDER, Colo. - Oct. 16, 2007 - WriteToLearn™ has
added the "Technology & Learning" magazine's 2007 Award of
Excellence to its growing list of honors. The award program recognized
Pearson's Web-based learning tool for developing writing and reading
comprehension skills as one of the year's most innovative applications.
"This year's winning products reflect an impressive effort by
publishers to respond to the real needs of schools," said Susan
McLester, editor in chief, "Technology & Learning."
"The offerings being honored are practical, innovative and central
to a variety of district and site operations."
Celebrating its 25th year, the "Technology & Learning"
magazine Award of Excellence honors innovative applications that break
new ground in some important way, as well as best-of-breed examples that
demonstrate clear superiority over similar products in the market.
This prestigious award comes closely on the heels of the launch of
WriteToLearn 4.0, which now includes more than 200 reading passages from
the company's popular Scott Foresman Reading Street, a reading program
designed to help elementary teachers build readers through motivating
and engaging literature, scientifically research-based instruction and
reliable teaching tools. These readings are targeted specifically at
struggling readers in grade four and higher.
"It is an honor to have WriteToLearn join the ranks of the
outstanding education technology products that the Awards of Excellence
have recognized over the past 25 years," said Lynn Streeter,
president of the Knowledge Technologies group of Pearson. "We know
that educators will find that the new reading passages and enhanced
teacher tools in WriteToLearn 4.0 make it an even more powerful tool for
building student writing and reading comprehension skills."
With WriteToLearn, students practice essay writing and summarization
skills, and their efforts are measured by Pearson's state-of-the-art
Knowledge Analysis Technologies™ (KAT) engine, which automatically
evaluates the meaning of text by examining whole passages. The KAT
engine is a unique automated assessment technology that evaluates the
meaning of text, not just grammatical correctness or spelling. Earlier
this year, scores for each of six traits of writing - ideas,
organization, conventions, sentence fluency, word choice and voice - were
added to WriteToLearn, making it an even more powerful tool for building
writing skills.
